PLANNING & GROWTH DEPARTMENT

Matters relating to planning and zoning are governed by both State and County laws. The Maryland Forest Conservation Act, for example, requires all county governments to adopt local forest conservation programs (Chapter 255, Acts of 1991; Code Natural Resources Article, secs. 5-1601 through 5-1613).

In Allegany County, the Planning and Growth Department started as the Planning Services Division and adopted its present name in May 2018 (Resolution no. 18-11).

The Planning and Growth Department coordinates the development, adoption, and implementation of County land use plans and policies. Both short- and long-range planning services are provided by the Department to various County boards, including the Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Board of County Commissioners, as well as to the general public. The Department also provides assistance to outside agencies focusing on development opportunities in the County.
