[County Seal, Allegany County, Maryland] Origin: Allegany County was formed in 1789 from Washington County (Chapter 29, Acts of 1789). Allegany comes from the Indian word, oolikhanna, meaning "beautiful stream."

Boundaries: Bounded north by Pennsylvania; east by Washington County; south by Potomac River; west by Garrett County.
