EXECUTIVE BRANCH

RECREATION

ORIGIN & FUNCTIONS

DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION & PARKS

Established in 1949, the Department of Recreation and Parks provides recreational and leisure opportunities for the citizens of the County. Thousands of recreational programs, including individual and team sports, arts and crafts, social clubs and activities, and special events are available through a cooperative effort with County volunteer recreation and parks councils.

The Department acquires, develops, and maintains a wide range of parklands and open spaces for public use and benefit. Through a joint-use agreement with the County Board of Education and County Public Schools, public schools also serve as community recreation centers (Code Local Government Article, secs. 1-601 through 1-611; County Charter, secs. 531-532; County Code, secs. 3-2-1501 through 3-2-15, 30-1-101 through 30-2-103).

    BOARD OF RECREATION & PARKS
The Board of Recreation and Parks was authorized in 1958. It formulates plans and policies for public recreation; the organization of recreation councils; the establishment of recreation programs; and the acquisition, management, preservation, and development of all lands, waters, buildings and other facilities in the County as parks and recreation areas and facilities.

Appointed by the County Executive, the Board consists of ten members: one from each Councilmanic district, and three additional members (Code Local Government Article, sec. 1-606; County Charter, sec. 533; County Code, secs. 30-3-1701 through 30-3-1705).
